The Thirsty Cow:
A few years ago I studied a course in dairy farming. As part of that course I went out to Hawkesbury Agricultural College for a field day. We worked on dehorning a Canadian Friesian cow. There was a problem, she was thirsty, so she was very restless and we could not hold her still. The only way to quiet her was to let her drink, she drank and became calm.
The Israelites were exactly the same in Exodus 17:3
“And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against
Moses, and said, Where fore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt,
to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?”
This scripture raises at least two issues!
1: We need to know where the water supply is:
The tree planted by the river never searches for water. It never leaves that place and it drinks constantly. The trees that have no water are parched, wilted and dead, (have a look around Coober Pedy). They have no beauty or self worth. They are products of their environment.
The Israelites had a slave mentality and there were rumblings in the ranks. They were in survival mode, asking, where is our water? We will die out here. Their focus was on themselves. They had forgotten that they were the People of GOD
2: The Israelites opposed Moses their Leader:
The Israelites heart was misdirected because they saw their need as physical. When we pay more attention to the physical or temporal we will look to our leaders or blame them so they fix our problem. Moses cried out to the Lord Exodus 17:4. And God gave direction.
The question was finally asked “Is the Lord among us or not?”
We are taught in Matt. 5:6 to hunger and thirst after righteousness in this we are called to be obedient. We are not here for our survival but rather to worship GOD our Heavenly Father and have NO other distractions.
If we are not thirsty, we will have no desire to drink. If we are thirsty we will be very restless and find all sorts of ways to complain. Our heart will not be resolute on worshiping the God who made everything. Let us together drink from the well of God’s word and learn to love the meeting together not for our sake but rather that God will have the Glory.
Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
To the Church at Victor Harbor: Never forget who you are and where you have come from!
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
